A large organisation like Scouts Australia NSW needs many enthusiastic volunteers and dedicated professional employees to keep the Movement going strong.

From professional staff and advisers, to activity centre managers and event contingent leaders, fresh talent is always on demand.

Below are a list of roles, both paid and volunteer, currently available at Scouts NSW:

Employed positions

The Scouts NSW Alpine Activity Centre (AAC) is in the Snowy Mountains on a 5-acre property, offering a range of services, facilities, and provides short term private and group accommodation options. It boasts lakeside views of Lake Jindabyne, and is within 20 minutes of Kosciuszko National Park, Thredbo Resort and Perisher Valley.

The Customer Service & Administration Manager is essential to providing a memorable and quality stays for guests. This position presents a unique opportunity to grow and diversify the AAC, making it appeal to more people.

This is a 6 Month Fixed Term Position - April to September 2024 (38 hours per week).

Volunteer positions

Currently the Scouts NSW Air Activity Centre (AAC) offers an activity approximately every fortnight (generally Sundays). With additional volunteers the AAC has the potential to increase the number of activity weekends.

Air Activity Centre welcomes volunteers both with and without specialist skills and experience - if you have a love for aviation and working in a team, please get in touch! 

All our volunteers are part of a warm, welcoming and enthusiastic team of Leaders, Adult Helpers, Venturers and Rovers.  Everyone receives training on each activity including safety. New members are teamed up with one of our experienced volunteers so that they too will become proficient in participating in and leading with the roles below:

Ground Activities Team

The following is not exhaustive however included in the role of our ground activities team undertake is:

  • Assist in setting up for the day
  • Supervise on aerodrome walks – This entails guiding small groups through the airport identifying and includes explaining the different types of aircraft and their uses, the various infrastructure (control tower, windsock, weather station, refuelling area, aerodrome markings etc)  observing aircraft movements along taxiways, run up area (checking of all systems and moving surfaces before departure),  take offs and landings.
  • Loading/unloading passengers
  • Assist the visiting Groups in the design and construction of gliders and a flyoff competition
  • Supervise the use of flight simulators
  • Assist where required pilots in manoeuvring the aircraft/refuelling
  • Assist in readying the Centre for the next activity day.  

Activity Centre Pilot

There is one other volunteering role which anyone from within the Scouting family (Leader, adult helper, parent/guardian or member of staff) with the appropriate proven training, qualifications and skills and that is the role of an volunteer Activity Pilot.

These individual(s) will as a minimum hold an existing Commercial Pilot Licence. Of course, acceptance would require any interested party to meet the very high standard and other requirements to become a Scout Activity Pilot.

Scouts NSW has embarked on an exciting program to provide mental health first aid training to our members.

As part of the program delivery aspect, we are seeking and calling for Expressions of Interest for suitable candidates to be trained as Accredited Mental Health First Aid Instructors in Youth MHFA. Scouts NSW has a small number of positions available for MHFA Instructors.

Expressions of Interest should include statements addressing each of the criteria below and a resume that outlines your experience.

Selection Criteria

MHFA Instructor training applicants need to demonstrate they meet the following selection criteria:

  1. Good knowledge of mental health problems and their treatments
  2. Personal or professional experience supporting people with mental illnesses
  3. Respectful attitudes towards people with mental health problems
  4. Enthusiasm to deliver MHFA courses
  5. Excellent group facilitation and communication skills
  6. Knowledge of mental health services
  7. Good interpersonal skills
  8. Hold a valid Working With Children Check from your state/territory of residence
  9. Capacity and willingness to travel to train across Regions
  10. Willingness to participate in regular debriefings and skills development as part of the State MHFA Team
  11. Willingness to utilise your learned skills at major regional, state and national events.

Training

Successful candidates will be able to satisfy the selection criteria to become a MHFA Accredited Instructor and be prepared to attend a Mental Health First Aid Australia Instructors training course, which involves a five-day course, usually in Sydney.

Accreditation is an external qualification and subject to successfully completing the instructors training course and assessments undertaken by Mental Health First Aid Australia.

External Training Courses are scheduled for Sydney and will be scheduled when the successful candidates are selected. Dates of Instructor training courses will be advised in due course.

Successful candidates can expect to have their accreditation instructor training course, accommodation, travel and meal allowances covered by Scouts NSW.

Ideally, we are seeking adult members who are Leaders or Rover Scouts from all Scouts NSW Regions to provide Mental Health First Aid training on a regular basis.

Expressions of Interest must be in writing, explaining clearly how you meet the Selection Criteria.

Expressions of Interest must be received by Friday, 29 March 2024 at 5pm.
