|A Night At the Museum For National Science Week|
How did your Scouts mark Science Week this year? One of our NSW Scout Troops organised an exclusive night at the Australian Museum, where they participated in the ABC’s Citizen Science project.
1st Balmain Scout Troop helped identify animals and birds from some of the 1 million images taken by automatic cameras located in bushland across Australia. The animals were lured by peanut butter, and their presence triggered the camera to take an image.
It wasn’t necessary to use any sweet temptations to encourage the Scouts to get involved. By helping the ABC to work through hundreds of images, they demonstrated the power of citizen science!
They were joined by Mark Speakman, the NSW Minister for the Environment and Minister for Heritage, and members of his department. The following day, Professor Mary O’Kane, the NSW Chief Scientist, told a breakfast meeting how jealous she was that they all earned their science badge!
