Retracing the Steps of Our Anzacs Print E-mail

Brenton Dearing, the Region Commissioner for Venturer Scouts in the Riverina region of NSW, will be embarking on an adventure aboard the national sail training ship Young Endeavour, sailing from Spain to be apart of the commemorative Anzac Day services at Gallipoli.

Brenton was excited to discover that of the 8 voyages forming part of the Young Endeavour 2015 World Voyage Program, he had secured a place on the voyage which would be anchored off North Beach on Anzac Day.

"I applied for the World Voyage because it was the opportunity of a lifetime, to experience life at sea and commemorate the original Anzacs 100 years on."

"Twelve of my relatives served in WWI; seven were killed in action and one died of wounds. Only four returned home. Three were original Anzacs and were part of the landings at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Sergeant Arthur Purton MM was wounded in action for the first time on that date. Another relative, Lane Corporal William Penfold, was wounded at Gallipoli during the August offensive."

"Last year, my mother travelled to Albany, Western Australia for the commemoration of the one-hundred-year anniversary of the First Convoy departing for Gallipoli, so it's fitting I'll be completing the pilgrimage she began to honour those who served in WWI."

"I feel incredibly honoured to have this amazing opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Anzacs and to be able to honour their service. Having been a member of the Scouting movement for many years, I also recognise the significance of the roles played by Scouts during WWI."

Brenton leaves Albury this weekend and will join the Young Endeavour at Cadiz, Spain on 4 April for the 21-day voyage across the Mediterranean, including a call at Malta, before sailing to the Peninsula on 24 April and anchoring off North Beach for the joint Dawn Service.
