This Australia Day several Members of the Scouting movement were recognised by their local councils for the wonderful work they have done in the community. One of those Members was 1st Balgowlah Group Leader and Garigal District Scout Leader, Tom Miles, who was awarded 2016 Manly Local Citizen of the Year!

Tom is widely known for his continuous charity work and dedication to youth development through sports and Scouts. But it was founder and director of the Sanfilippo Children's Foundation, Megan Donnell, who nominated Tom for the title for being a constant source of support to her family after both of her children were diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome - a rare and fatal disease.

“Since both my children, Isla (6) and Jude (4) Donnell, were diagnosed with a terminal illness, Tom and his wife Donna have been a constant source of support to our family, babysitting, regularly checking in for chinwag and assisting us with the launch of our not-for-profit research organisation, the Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation,” Megan said.

“While Tom would insist he’s ‘just helping out’ and ‘doing what anyone else would do’, we know that this simply is not the case. Tom has consistently gone above and beyond, and genuinely cares about us, our children, and many other people.”

Head over to the Manly Council website to read more about Tom's story or check out his speech on the Sanfilippo Facebook page.

Congratulations Tom!
