Meet our Youth Safe Advocates – Jo

Name: Jo Hillyard

Role in Scouts: Cub Scout Leader

Day Job: Retired.

Hobbies and Interests: Cubs (of course!); I love a good movie or a book and I'm a bit of a Harry Potter fan; LGBTQI+ issues and advocacy.

Favourite moment in Scouting: Lots of little moments - I love it when a youth member works through an issue and finds a sense of achievement.

What inspired you to work with youth members? Youth members are so different from each other, but Scouting gives a common way of linking us all. I love the 'light bulb' moments when young people achieve more than they thought possible.

What key thing has a youth member said to you that has stayed with you? "When I grow up, I want to be either a teacher or a Cub Scout Leader." I had to break the news that I didn't get paid. She was impressed that you could be both!

Why did you become a Youth Safe Advocate? Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and every youth member needs to feel safe.

Why is the Youth Safe Advocates scheme important for Scouts NSW? The more of us that keep youth safety a priority, the better Scouting will be.

What is the key message you want everyone to remember about the Youth Safe Advocates scheme? Our Leaders are in a trusted position - we should all strive to keep earning that trust and to keep all Leaders accountable.
