Meet our Youth Safe Advocates – Kelly-Anne

Name: Kelly-Anne Dorne

Role in Scouts: Scout Leader at 1st Oakville

Day Job: Primary Teacher

Hobbies and Interests: Spending time in the great outdoors - bushwalking, reading, observing our local fauna and cultivating my local frog population.

Favourite moment in Scouting: Nurturing the leadership skills of a group of young Scouts in the lead up to Jamboree 2019. They faced many challenges with confidence and maturity.

What inspired you to work with youth members? I could see how much fun my children had in Scouts and thought, 'why should they have all the fun?'

What key thing has a youth member said to you that has stayed with you? “That was awesome! Thanks for showing me, Jemima!” - from a Scout with the biggest grin after finishing his first abseil. He was afraid of heights, but he gave it ago after a little bit of encouragement and watching me go first (I hadn't abseiled in 20 years).

Why did you become a Youth Safe Advocate? Every child deserves to feel safe and to be heard; as a Youth Safe Advocate, I can support youth members when they are feeling vulnerable.

Why is the Youth Safe Advocates scheme important for Scouts NSW? The Youth Safe Advocates scheme is another way Scouts NSW has committed to the importance of the safety of our youth members.

What is the key message you want everyone to remember about the Youth Safe Advocates scheme? That Youth Safe Advocates are approachable at any time for support - you are important.
