David Downie, DRC (Adults in Scouting) in Hunter & Coastal Region, has been recognised for his exceptional service to Scouting by receiving a Silver Kangaroo Award.
Having previously been recognised with a Silver Emu in 2010, David has continued to execute his extensive Scouting responsibilities with enthusiasm, supplemented with the utmost honesty and integrity. Of high significance is his 18-year tenure as RCAT&D – an extraordinary commitment and contribution.
Despite dedicating much of his life to the organisation, David was incredibly humble when told of his award.
He said: “I’m really delighted with it, there are so many people who are more deserving of this than me. I’ve been involved with Scouts for 37 years and this news topped off the weekend very nicely.
“I don’t consider the work I do to be above and beyond, I’m just doing my work, doing what I need to do. It’s really important to me because I had great leaders when I was a kid and this is sort of pay back in a way.”
David is very well recognised in all Scouting circles and respected by all associated with him. His disposition is conducive to new leaders where David’s guidance and support is invaluable to them, making them feel valued and welcomed into the Scouting Movement.
Known for being extremely approachable, David makes people feel very comfortable and at ease to be able openly to discuss any issues leaders may have in their individual responsibilities of their appointments.
Asked why he does what he does, David said it comes down to seeing the joy that Scouts brings to people on a regular basis.
He explained: “At Scouts, we’re preparing kids for the future, teaching them the life skills to go and make a difference. It can be hard work, but it’s worth it when you see someone who has done something that they never thought was possible and the pure joy that comes with that. That’s when it really counts.
“I always say Scouts is an enabling organisation, it makes things possible for people and gives them endless opportunities, that’s why I do what I do.”
Massive congratulations to David from all at Scouts NSW!
